Having moved many times in the thirty+ years of my marriage, I was touched by your description of the misery of having to pack up numerous times, with no permanent place. I am, by nature, a nester, and value the same things that you do in that respect. It’s heartbreaking to begin again so often, each time knowing that it’s temporary and that you will be packing up and culling yet again, wondering why you even bother trying to make a home. But that’s what we do, even if it’s only for a single day.

Through a series of calamities that upended our lives, my husband and I have, at last, a permanent home. Having this has changed our lives completely, and entirely for the better. I know that the UK is not your dream, but you may find that having a place to STAY will bring you something wonderful that you can’t conceive of until you have experienced it. Your boys are clearly the most important thing in your life, which is as it should be. But I think you may find that your dream can come true in a way that you never anticipated – at least, that’s my hope for you.

Alison – I just had to drop you a comment. I am a 35-year-old-mother of one, living in urban neighborhood in Southern Finland. I feel very much like my childhood dream landscape was something similar to yours, except mine was in the UK. Growing up with films such as The Secret Garden made me dream of my countryside sanctuary with my own garden, while living in this city where I live now again – after swearing I would never be back. You’re story inspires me, and reminds me that home is where family is. I hope all the best for you in finding your forever home, and I hope the same for myself. Coming from Finland, I swear the UK weather does not feel gray at all. 🙂

Oh Ali what a hard decision it must have been. The best part is that you did it- you lived there and Italy will always be a part of you and your story.
